Measurements
1, Measuring of layer thickness - ISO 2360
The thickness of the non-metallic layer will be measured on a sample piece with a special tool. There are two ways of measuring: measuring with destroying and measuring without destroying of surface.
-
- Measuring of layer thickness with destroying
The surface will be cut till the metal surface. We can measure the thickness on that destroyed surface with a specific tool.
- Measuring of layer thickness with destroying
-
- Measuring of layer thickness without destroying - ISO 2360
The thickness will be measured with a specific probe tool. This can be used for magnetic and for non magnetic materials as well.
- Measuring of layer thickness without destroying - ISO 2360
Areas of layer-thickness measuring:
Layer-thickness measuring as a basic measuring used for every kind of painting. Checking the thickness of the powder paint is a basic requirement before every mechanical tests, this raises its importance. Monitoring of layer thickness has an importance from economical view as well. Excessive thickness doesn't improve the durability of the surface, but makes costs definitely higher.
2, Adhesion test with cross cut ISO 2409
With this test we can check the adhesion of the powder paint to the metal surface using special blades. We make six-six cuts 90 degrees to each other, down to the metal surface. The distance of the cuts from each other will be determined by the expected layer thickness. According to that:
-
- 0-60µm: 1mm cut distance
- 60-120µm: 2mm cut distance
- more than 120µm: 3mm cut distance.
After making the cuts we put a special sticky tape on the surface. After removing the tape and cleaning the surface we can read the results.
Areas where it can be used:
Whit this method we can check adhesion of powder coating. So we can prove that abnormal amortization won't happen if used in normal circumstances. The result can give us a clue also about the quality of pre-treatment and baking.
3, Buhholz rigidity test ISO 2815
With this method we can check the rigidity of the powder coating using pressure and weight gauge. After cleaning the surface we put the weight on the surface for 30 minutes, after removing the weight we can get the results from the size of the dent. We check the dent under microscope. We use the following figure:
Buchholz rigidity = 100mm / length of dent
Areas where it can be used:
It is suitable for testing rigidity of products in regular use and strain. With this method we can check how pressure can shape the surface on one unit. This is what happens if product is used in everyday life. If the rigidity of coating is not right the surface will be deformed under pressure. With Buchholz test we can check the rigidity of coating and predict potential deforming in the future.
